| The phenomenal success of the Brownie gnome, attributed largely to Palmer Cox, but celebrated by numerous other authors through the 19th and 20th centuries, has all but faded from memory. Cameras, cookies, Girl Scouts, and other modern remnants, prove that the Brownies have an enduring legacy. As M.E. Heller confirms in The Return of the Brownies, the playful spirits who enchanted Palmer Cox over a century ago, are alive and well in a dragon's lair in Underland. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The magic of fairies is not an end in itself. Its virtue is in its operations. Among these are the satisfactions of certain primordial human desires, one of which is to survey the depths of time and space, and another is to hold communion with other living things.

| M.E. Heller is an artist and scholar who has received national acclain for her handcrafted cloth dolls. Archetypal and literary characters she has portrayed attracted the attention of the Strong Museum in Rochester, New York and led, in 1986, to the creation of a line of dolls based on the Palmer Cox Brownie. In 1999, she provided dolls and artwork to the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House for their traveling exhibition in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the Brownie Camera. Her research into the characters, mythology, and legends of the Brownies reaffirmed her belief in the underlying benevolence and reverence for Mother Earth, inspiring the author to write this story. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
